Writing Impairments Communication Tips
Here are some general strategies to help people with aphasia who have writing impairments:
- Encourage the person to write the first letter, or draw slots for how many letters there are in the word
- See if the person can identify where the missing letters are “tall” letters (like b, d, f, h, k, l. t) or letters with “tails” (like g, j, p, q, y), or “short” letters (m, n, r, s, v, w, x, z).
- Encourage the person to speak, draw, or gesture to communicate the message that they are trying to get across.
- Make a list of frequently used words that the person with aphasia can select from. This can be handy for things like grocery lists or other writing tasks with repeated items.
