Reading Impairments Communication Tips

Here are some general strategies for helping people with aphasia understand written language:

  • Provide pictures or other contextual support about the general topic
  • Underline or emphasize key words in a sentence
  • Provide redundancy. Sometimes people with aphasia get the basic meaning from a short paragraph that has some redundancy in it better than they do from a single short sentence.
  • Even people with severe aphasia can understand written language in familiar contexts. Sales advertisements with pictures and newspaper headlines with a photo are examples of things that are familiar and have built-in redundancy and context.
